today, what if anything should the united states be doing about this? conor powell is tracking the syrian story from just over the story in israel today. conor? >> reporter: megyn, finding the solution to end that bloodshed in syria seems to be fading with every passing day now. the international community is picking up diplomatic pressure on syria. the united states, great britain and other countries expelled syrian diplomats but that diplomatic pressure hasn't really changed the violence on the ground. it continues every single day. as you pointed out 13 people were found dead in eastern syria today by u.n. observers. they said their hands were bound and they were shot at close range. the city of homs has been just pounded in the last 24, 36 hours or so with a barrage of artillery and rockets coming from syrian forces. we don't know how many people have been killed in homs in the past day or so but it has the potential to be substantial. now that diplomatic pressure though doesn't seem to have much of an impact. today russia and china have given a boost to syria. both those c

the shaquil afridi story, the issue, saying there's been an overreaction in the united states. it sees it as very much an internal judicial matter and thinks america should mind its own business when it comes to the pakistani court. there is concern here in pakistan for the welfare of shaquil afridi. we know he is on suicide watch in his prison in the city of peshawar, there are concerns about his physical health and symptoms yet to be described to the media relating to a deep depressionsy suffering result of the 33 year sentence. he is currently in hiding. we believe they are here in islamabad and they are not making applicable statements. they are wary of the rising backlash between islam groups and antiamerican lobbyists who really have the potential to actually harm these people. that's at least what the family says, as do other support groups. human rights people and also lawyers, now starting to say look, he shouldn't have been tried in a tribal court, he should be tried in the federal court, and if he had, not only would he have had a chance to defend himself, because he hadn't,

to launch a military strike much sooner than the united states would. this comes back to the issue of politics. there's been a lot of thought and a lot of reports that israel will hold off until after the u.s. elections in order to strike iran. however, as a u.s. secretary of state once famously said, israel does not have a foreign policy, only domestic policy. it was just announced in the past couple of days that israel is going to desolve its parliament and go to early elections some time very soon. so it is anybody's guess, megyn how that would affect a go, no-go decision on an attack on the iranian nuclear facilities, back to you. megyn: a little context for you now. iran attended talks with six powers about the nuclear issue back in december 2010, then again in january 2011. no progress was reported. talks again took place in april of this year, there were no major announcements. and another round has been scheduled for may 23rd in baghdad. since 2009 the us has applied at least 12 rounds of sanctions against iran including sanctions against firms that sell iran energy equipme
